A Conversation Between Sisters: Esther & Sarah Teichmann on art, science and sisterhood

April 27, 2023 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This event brings together the artist Esther Teichmann and scientist Sarah Teichmann in a discussion focusing on their interdisciplinary collaboration Constellations, a project that produced an experimental film and online publication informed by research into the Human Cell Atlas funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge. An excerpt of the film will be screened as part of the event and will include a wider conversation into Sarah and Esther’s relationship as siblings, how this has influenced and informed their two practices, and how they enact sisterhood in their careers as an artist and a scientist.

The event has been organised as part of the public programme accompanying the current Radium Dreams  exhibition that brings together artworks by Eileen Cooper with poetry by Sue Hubbard on the life and work of Marie Curie. Creative support is a key theme to the exhibition: between Marie Curie and her sister Bronislawa, between the scientist and her husband Pierre, and between Eileen Cooper and Sue Hubbard on their collaborative project.

A drinks reception will follow the event. FREE. Booking recommended via this link.

Sarah Teichmann is Head of Cellular Genetics and Senior Group Leader at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge, UK. She is interested in global principles of regulation of gene expression and protein complexes, with a focus on immunity. She did her PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK and was a Beit Memorial Fellow at University College London. She started her group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 2001, discovering stereotypical pathways of assembly and evolution of protein complexes during this time. In 2013, she moved to the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton/Cambridge, jointly with the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. In February 2016 she became Head of the Cellular Genetics Programme at the Sanger and co-founded the Human Cell Atlas international consortium, which aims to create comprehensive reference maps of all human cells to further understand health and disease, which she continues to lead.
