Sarah Belchetz-Swenson

Sarah Belchetz-Swenson (1938-2021) has been described as a ‘poet of the inner world’ and created delicate and contemplative works in the traditional genres of portraiture, still life and landscape.
In her series ‘Rites’, she captures three generations of women going about their everyday chores – folding bedding, brushing each other’s hair. In these scenes, mundane acts are imbued with a quiet poeticism and take on a universal significance. They are rites of passage – both deeply personal and common to everyone.
