Wang Mengsha
Wang Mengsha was born in 1982 in Wuxi and studied in Australia and the UK, before returning to China. She now divides her time between Wuxi and Beijing. Her paintings often engage with the theme of femininity. Her works often depict domestic settings and objects like flowers and birds and are painted in bright pinks, yellows and blues.
‘Inebriated under the Shade of the Blossom’ (2016) portrays a woman in traditional Chinese garb, surrounded by an aviary of colourful exotic birds, which merge into the floral, decorative background. The dream-like quality of the painting is emphasised by the bright yellow cat which stares out of the work at the viewer – an unsmiling Cheshire Cat.
