Maisie Cousins

Maisie Cousins plays with colour, composition and scale in these her alternative still lifes. In Breakfast, perfectly formed roses intermingle with cherry stones, egg yolks and a piece of broken glass against a pitch-black background. The natural and man-made objects come together and appear both domesticated and unruly, pointing to the convergence of nature and culture in still life. Cousin’s carefully composed works, which often feature food, flowers, waste and the female body, simultaneously seduce and repulse the viewer. She says: “Nature is always beautiful and also disgusting.”
