Madeleine Strindberg

Madeleine Strindberg was Artist-in-Residence at the National Gallery in 1988/89, when she made a series of Metal Paintings, including Incisions.

She has written, “In the Metal Paintings I am using sheets of aluminum which are cut out, firmly attached to the canvas, battered during the process of their manipulation, and then surrounded with – or rather embedded in – oil paint and encaustic. This creates a tension between the hard, inflexible, semi-reflective metal shapes and the soft consistency of the surrounding oil paint … With the imposed intervention of foreign materials I am aiming to challenge the limitations of the flat canvas.”
