Kate Whiteford OBE
Kate Whiteford explores the signs and symbols of ancient cultures – among them the fish, circle and spiral. She strips the symbols of their immediate cultural references and examines their visual impact, often on a large scale, exploring the question of whether there is such a thing as a universal sign.
She has made a number of important ‘land drawings’ carved into the ground and filled with chippings, each relating to their particular sites. Her vibrant red and green prints and paintings are closely related to these large-scale projects.
