Gretchen Albrecht
Gretchen Albrecht refers to her series of semicircular works as ‘hemispheres’. They were made at a time when she had recently moved from her birthplace in Auckland, New Zealand in the southern hemisphere to Britain in the northern hemisphere. She writes, “The hemisphere implies space. A shape to contain the feelings.” This semicircular shape can suggest many things, including the sky and the barrel vaults, arches and lunettes of churches.
