Cindy Sherman

Born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Cindy Sherman abandoned painting for photography while attending the State University of New York at Buffalo, and in 1976, moved to New York to pursue a career as a photographer.

She is best known for her conceptual self-portraits which critique gender and identity. Throughout her career she has turned the camera lens on herself, assuming a variety of different roles and identities. She has said: ‘I like making images that from a distance seem kind of seductive, colorful, luscious and engaging, and then you realize what you’re looking at is something totally opposite.’
